    ***HURRICANE KATRINA ANIMAL WELFARE EFFORTS***

You can assist the Humane Society of the United States in its Hurricane Katrina efforts by donating to their Disaster Relief Fund.  Click here to donate and to find out how the HSUS is working to assist pet owners and their pets during this trying time.

ADOPTING ANIMALS TO HELP THE RELIEF EFFORTS

If you wish to assist in the relief efforts by taking an animal into your home, please consider adopting an animal that's already here in our local shelters.  The organizations rescuing pets affected by Hurricane Katrina are working hard to reunite as many pets with owners as possible.  Therefore, most of the animals are remaining in the region.  Those animals who may make it to Indiana will be in need of special medical and emotional care that only the professionals can give.  By adopting a local pet now, you make space for a hurricane-rescued animal that may need help later.

PETCO & CATS HAVEN SEND RELIEF TO LOUISIANA PETS!

On Friday, September 9th, a truck left Indianapolis to bring much needed items to the animal rescue efforts of Noah's Wish.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by Petco stores or The Cat Doctor at 56th & Georgetown and dropping off donated goods.  Food, litter, food bowls, collars, leashes, pet carriers, batteries, fans and more are now on their way to Slidell, Louisiana to assist in the care and rescue of Katrina animals!

Check back often for more information on local efforts to help the animals affected by Katrina!

There are many ways you can help KJ and the Indianapolis animal community even if adoption isn't the option for you right now.  Here's how!

    1.  ADOPT.  Obviously, the greatest help you can give is to open your home to a loving shelter pet.

    2. SPAY AND NEUTER.  The only way to control the pet population is to do as Bob Barker said, "Have your pets spayed or neutered!"  One female cat in her lifetime can be responsible for hundreds of thousands of other cats being brought into the world.  If you think your ONE pet doesn't make a difference, you're wrong.  For information on the low-cost options available, click on Low Cost Clinics to the left.  You'd be surprised how inexpensive it can be!

    3.  VOLUNTEER.  Give your time to a shelter and you're giving a lot!  All of the shelters in the area can use your help whether it's walking the dogs or socializing the kittens.  You can even offer your talents!  Shelters always have a need for office assistance, graphic designers, gardeners, attorneys and other specially skilled volunteers.

    4.  DONATE.  Animal organizations are often forgotten in the mainstream of fundraising events.  Organize a fundraiser in your office or simply drop a buck or two off when you see any organization out.  Every penny helps!

    5.  SPONSOR A PET.  Many organizations will let you sponsor a pet.  It's like having a pet away from home!  You can even sponsor a tiger or lion!  Visit the Exotic Feline Rescue Center's website to find out more on sponsoring a BIG cat!

    6. TELL A FRIEND.  Get your family and friends involved by simply letting them know about KJ's Strays!  If you know someone who has a pet that's not spayed or neutered, let them know why it's important.  Spread the word that we can stop unnecessary euthanasia and end the battle against pet overpopulation by simply being more responsible pet owners.
